WELFARE BENEFITS

In all cases we will consider whether you are eligible for and/or receiving the appropriate Welfare Benefits. Thus we are able to advise you directly on cases where you feel you are not receiving the benefits you are entitled to and we can also assess your eligibility for benefits if you consult us primarily on other matters such as housing or debt.

The Types of Benefits

There are two main types of Benefits to which you may be eligible:

Means tested benefits eg. Income Support, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit

Non-means tested benefits, payable if you satisfy certain conditions such as disability. These may be either:-

contributory (depending on National Insurance Contributions paid) such as Incapacity Benefit, Maternity Allowance or

non-contributory such as Child Benefit, Disability Living Allowance.

The rules regarding eligibility and the amount of benefit paid are complicated and we can advise you or you can contact the Department of Work and Pensions and/or the HM Revenue and Customs website for further information.

The Child Poverty Action Group also has further advice.
